Today in 1971 the U.S.S.R.’s own Mars 3 was launched, and was the first probe to successfully achieve its mission of landing on Mars and briefly transmitting data back to the orbiting craft. This is also Memorial Day in the U.S., a day to remember all the soldiers who never came back from their own missions.
